The Series Project began life as an experiment. There are many photography courses, technical stuff like how to light, how a particular photographer works etc., etc. Information and theory. What about practice?

What if there was a photographic course with a tangible photographic outcome specifically aimed at helping photographers to ideate and actally create new personal work?

We designed a programme specifically as a catalyst to help a group of photographers refresh and refine their visual voices by completing a series of personal work in just 6 weeks. From scratch.

The course covered everything; from conception and ideation, through planning, idea articulation, narrative & treatment to execution & edit selection. We then held 5 hour-long live webinar sessions over 5 weeks followed by 7 days shooting and critique on location in a carefully selected global city.

The experiment worked. Each attendee finished with a folio ready, PR-able photo series that echoes their personal style and purpose. Attendees won multiple awards, landed client briefs and perhaps more importantly each attendee interogated the “why” and “what” of their practice and emerged with a refreshed and refined visual voice.

Personal work is key. There’s no such thing as a successful commercial photographer who only shoots commercial work. Properly thought through personal work leads to commercial commissions and puts the photographer in control, showcasing the way you want to shoot. It drives the direction of your practice.
